Metal 4 MS

Are you that One Group/Individual that will stand above everyone else?  Do have that Passion and Drive? Are you unique and bring something new and exciting to your Musical Genre? Are you in this scene for the long haul? I hope so - I really want to Listen to Prime, Original, and Cutting Edge Music. Will your Music tell me a story, make me laugh, shout cry, fall in or out of love, Make me want to dance or knock me out...I am out there Listening and I want to HEAR you!  If  LB Iikes, your music it will be played on MySpace and we'll go from there! I want you to succeed!!!
The dictionary describes "Criticisim" as the act or art of analyzing and evaluating or judging the quality of a literary or artistic work,  and/or musical performance. The word "Constructive" is geared toward helping to improve, promoting further development or achievement. When the two words are put together and put to use by somelike myself, a dreaded Music Journalist/Music Critic/Arts & Entertainment Critic, A&R Rep. and Friend...the constructive criticism is meant to provide direction in a positive manner in order for the artist/band to improve or enhance their craft.
Anyone who seeks that upper berth of the charts, the limelight and the accolades of the press, and their fans, had better be able to handle alittle constructive criticism. Have the sensibility and humility to learn from a bad or indifferent review. Don't think of a bad review as negative but as a way to improve. No one is infallible, we all have our flaws. Its a matter of  your commitment to become better and a willingness to make changes for the better.
Remember that with so many genres of music out there, the competition level right now is at its highest.  So listen to a few words of wisdom as they are meant to help you succeed. Let years of experience and insight in a non-biased  polite manner inspire you to improve.  It's your future...

 Why a Benefit Gig for Multiple Sclerosis  Why Metal 4 MS?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a nervous system disease that affects your brain and spinal cord. It damages the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects your nerve cells. This damage slows down or blocks messages between your brain and your body, leading to the symptoms of MS. They can include
Visual disturbances 
Muscle weakness 
Trouble with coordination and balance 
Sensations such as numbness, prickling, or "pins and needles" 
Thinking and memory problems 
No one knows what causes MS. It may be an autoimmune disease, which happens when your body attacks itself. Multiple sclerosis affects woman more than men. It often begins between the ages of 20 and 40. Approximately 400,000 Americans have MS, and every week about 200 people are diagnosed. World-wide, MS affects about 2.5 million people.Usually, the disease is mild, but some people lose the ability to write, speak or walk. There is no cure for MS, but medicines may slow it down and help control symptoms. Physical and occupational therapy may also help.

There are countless numbers of atheletes, public figures, ordinary everyday people!

MS does not discrimminate and can be a devastating disease to live with and to watch and care for someone who suffers from it.
New forefronts in medicines and research are important. The National MS Society is a driving force of MS research, supporting and stimulating world-class research into ways to prevent, better treat and cure this unpredictable disease of the brain and spinal cord and  move toward a world free of MS.

LB Advice: Band Competitions, making the finals

Todays words and advice are focused towards succeeding and reaching the Finals in any Band Competition.  I've been on both sides of the issue, & as currently as a Judge, I share with you some suggestions for your ultimate success.
May I suggest: the following:

1)  PROFILE MUSIC PLAYER.   Make it available, put up songs you're going to play at the competition, especially at the Finals...familarity is always helpful. If you're going to do a cover song, pick something from "Rock Band" songlist, mostly classics in many genres. Ok follow me here,  most of your audience will be under 21 and their parentals will be in the audience as well, many of songs will be familiar to both age groups and both age groups will most likely be voting... Familiarity & Recognition!

2) BULLETINS/NOTICES.  Send out Bulletins, get you're name out there, tell folks you're putting up new tracks, that you'll have merch available...etc Shameless self promotion is a must at this time!

3) INTERNET NETWORKING.  MySpace Friends: friend some of the other bands, When you know the line up, friend those playing 2 sets before you and 2 sets after you...you shall convert new fans!!  Get to know the competition.

4) SELF PROMOTION.  Promoting Your Next Gig, read my blog and follow my guidelines.  Remember that these competitions are about numbers and profits. The Promotors are not bringing in your fans, they are relying on you, and also want to see what type of following you ultimately have and your potential.

5) BAND OF BROTHERS (& SISTERS).  Be Neighborly and Supportive to other Bands.  You're all there for the same reason, you should support each other. Never trash talk another band.  You never know who's standing behind you. Also, help each other out (*#6), some bands can be eliminated/disqualified for bad behavior

6)  BE PREPARED.  Make sure you have your gear and extra equipment available.  Sometimes things happen out of your control during your set and you should be able to get back on track as fast as possible.  The judges are knowledgable enough to know what can and can't be avoided. If a band asks for help, step up, remember how you'd feel if it were you in the same situation.  Just one intolerable item, don't forget your gear completely.  Your delay holds up your set, sound checks and crowd will lose interest.  This is your FIRST IMPRESSION, make the most of it!

7) DON'T COMPLAIN.  No one is really interested in your personal and or social maladies.  This is your opportunity on stage, limited set time, so make the most of it.  Judges want to see your interaction with your audience and how your music affects the masses!   The judges are also looking at how professional you handle situations that may arise during your set.
 
8) ON STAGE  Have fun, rock it out, use whatever you have in your arsenal, be gimmicky, toss picks, stickers, neon necklaces, beads, etc.  Get the audience clapping, jumping, (Moshing usually not allowed), never give up on the crowd. Be positive.  Practice your banter and be able to ad lib when necessary. * If you get a chance, for a glimpse at professionalism watch "The Last Waltz" Movie, when Eric Clapton's strap broke and Robby Robertson immediately filled seamlessly....*

9) WHO ARE YOU.  Please state clearly and several times during your set the name of your band, band members and your contact information.  Make sure your street team is working the crowd (yes, read my advice on street teams). If you are allowed to have a MERCH table, (local rules apply), be there after your set for meet and greet.

10) BE APPRECIATIVE.  Thank the promotors/venues/sponsors and audience.  Even if you're not feeling it, be professional. Every band can have an off day, the judges know that and take everything into account. 
  
The ultimate goal in any band competition is to play the coveted main stage, but a word of caution.  Please read all the rules, the fine print and exactly what the competition is offering.  Make sure your band is not giving up an artistry rights and signing a 2-5 year deal (unless that's what you want).  Band Competitions are always fun and inviting, just make sure you know what the ultimate prize is and if that's what you desire, then have at it mates!

Bottomline, these competitions should be all about the music.  Use the opportunity wisely.  Be yourselves and sincere! Have fun and follow my advice and you'll get to the finals, although its ultimately your talents and music that make you a winner.
